The Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan was organized by the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated October 1, 1991. It was established to train qualified medical personnel, improve professional skills, and support the health needs of the population of the Aral Sea region.
According to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated February 14, 2020, TashPMI was transformed into the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan. Today, KMI is known as an important centre for medical education in the region.
Students from different regions of Uzbekistan, including Tashkent, Samarkand, and Andijan, study at the Institute. In recent years, students from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Russia have also enroled at KMI.
